- 1328. A VERY
FINE, RARE QUEEN ANNE CHERRY DRESSING TABLE
Eastern Connecticut, Circa 1750-1760

- DESCRIPTION: This
piece has the compact case, beautiful proportions, graceful cabriole
legs, and excellent fan carving for which the Connecticut cabinetmakers
are famous. The triple flat arch apron with acorn drop pendants
is a Colchester stylistic feature.

- The construction includes
a rail above the three lipped box drawers and a two-board molded
edge top pinned to the frame. The central drawer is carved with
a large fan having fifteen rays. This drawer has the added important
feature of being blocked. In addition, the drawer blocking conforms
to a matching blocked central section of the apron, the end result
being a graceful and harmonious emphasis on the large fan carving.

- Spurred knee returns are
applied under the apron; these plus the two drops beneath the
skirt reflect proper and careful conservation based on research
of the appearance of the originals.

- CONDITION: Excellent
condition with high quality construction features. This table
has been left alone in a single family for a long time. Its surface
quality reflecting the normal marks of usage plus the expected
shrinkage of wood are testament to its originality and wonderful
state of preservation. The pins securing the top have never been
moved. Drawer runners are original. A minor chip on the left
drawer lip exists on the upper right corner.

- SURFACE: Superb,
highly desirable old, probably original crazed surface with dark,
rich patina.

- REPAIRS: Brasses
are period but not original; borings from previous pulls can
be seen beneath the current hardware. Knee returns have been
created to conform to shadows remaining on the case. The shape
of both the knee returns plus the drop pendants are based on
references in Kugelman for Eastern Connecticut dressing tables.

- PROVENANCE: This
dressing table was found in a private home where it had remained
in a single family.
